The Anchor for our Souls
Hebrews 6:16-20 (NLT)
16 Now when people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question that oath is binding.
17 God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind.
18 So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.
19 This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.
20 Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.
The anchor for our souls is hope. It is the hope of spending eternity with God-salvation. Because of what Jesus has done, we can have this hope.
When a boat is tossed around in the sea it can throw out an anchor to keep it at one place. But as good as an anchor can be for stability, there are times that the anchor can't find anything to grab hold of in a big storm. The boat needs to get close to shore so it can be roped up to a dock. We need more than the hope of salvation. We need to get connected with Jesus when we encounter the storms of life.
The Rock
Luke 6:47-48 (NLT)
47 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it.
48 It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against the house, it stands firm because it is well built.
1 Corinthians 10:1-4 (NASB95)
1 For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
3 and all ate the same spiritual food;
4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.
If we will receive and apply Jesus' teachings in our life, He will be the solid rock that we can hold unto in the storms of life. Now here is a key to living a victorious life in the midst of storms:
Get as close as you can to Jesus. The closer you are to him the less you will be tossed to and fro.
If a boat is roped off to the dock but is far from the dock, it may be secure but it will get tossed to and fro. But if a boat is roped off very close to the dock it is not going to get tossed around. Yes, if you have truly accepted Christ into your life you can have the hope of eternity in heaven, but if you don't stay close to Jesus you can be tossed to and fro. And there is the danger that the rope will break. Why take the risk? Stay close to the solid rock.
